VOLUME 1 NUMBER 5

Hey athletes,

I’m here to announce that the SG Trifecta is going to be managed by the team from BBSC Endurance Sports.

BBSC is going to help take the SG Trifecta to the next level and make it one of the most awesome and nationally-acclaimed events possible.

This race has been awesome and been such a great thing in my life, but to ensure that the race stays awesome we felt it was time for a change.

Brogg & Co. put on awesome, high-quality races (check out their slideshow/gallery on their site). These guys are going to raise the bar for Utah Multisport and will definitely bring a whole new level of racing to the State.

FYI: We grandfathered in the Free-For-Life club with BBSC so that I would make good on my promise; those of you who get in the club are in FOREVER!!!!

I really don’t have an excuse to not be training now, so hopefully I’ll see many of you this year as I’m totally smoking you in the race :)

Thanks again for making the Trifecta and the SGTRI awesome, we’ll see you in May!

Love, Jared

P.S. Brogg Sterrett can be reached at race@sgtri.com

Contributing Coach: Andrea Watkins of Practical Coaching.
If you are like most athlete’s winter brings a welcome break from training and racing. It gives an opportunity to mentally shut off for a brief period. The same happens in nature; the trees and animals rest during the winter and prepare to come back in the spring strong and healthy. Our body and mind need the same time to regenerate and rejuvenate. The time off gives us the opportunity to come back stronger and healthier and provides the chance to train and perform at our best. The break also allows us the chance to reflect on the previous year and think about the following year and what goals we would like to set. However, because we are training for a healthy race season we don’t get the entire winter to rest and hibernate. We cannot underestimate the value of winter training and its benefits. Returning to base building and focusing on form give us the mental and physical break from peak performances; you can think of it as a modified hibernation and rejuvenation period. Whether you are new to triathlon or you are a veteran, winter training is imperative to a great, injury free, summer racing season.

Out of the three disciplines swimming is the most gentle to our body. After your race season ends and you have taken your break from focusing on triathlon and taken a short break from masters it is great to get back into the water and do some long, slow, distance swims and drill work. During the winter months we like to incorporate separate drill sessions into monthly schedules along with masters workouts. We also like to take two benchmark one-mile swim times after the end of season break. The first time is taken while swimming a mile at a comfortable pace and the second effort (weeks later) is taken at race pace. One of the ways we use this information is to demonstrate to athletes the amount of increase in effort in the water and the minimal return on this effort in the overall picture of a triathlon. Being able to maintain a comfortable effort throughout the entire swim will serve you better in a triathlon than going all out and redlining at any moment in the swim. Redlining during any point in the swim will affect your performance later in the race. Basically, swim training during the winter includes drills, distance, and masters.

Cycling during the base period is strictly base building. Work focuses on time on the bike, distance, and cadence. If you live in a winter climate and there is snow on the ground you get to reacquaint yourself with your trainer. We use the CompuTrainer as our trainer. The great thing about the CompuTrainer is you can program different courses and receive information on watts, cadence, heart rate, and pedal stroke mechanics. The more efficient your pedal stroke the more energy you conserve. If you enjoy spin classes it is important to keep your focus of base building in mind during class. Most classes like to have you push harder gears and do intervals and sprints. It is not appropriate for this time of year. We understand the need for a group setting and support that by outlining athlete goals for the days they attend spin class. Mostly, the plans consist of low resistance and cadences of 100RPM. Base building on the bike also provides a great opportunity to train your focus. Depending on your fitness level and the distance you compete in rides can range from 2-5 hours. If you are doing those kinds of rides on the trainer they can be great days to train your focus for long periods of time.

Run training follows the same logic as cycling. The great thing about triathlon is that cycling helps keep and build base for running and vice versa. If you are riding your bike for sessions of an hour or more you are creating an endurance base that running can build from. Our plans incorporate some tempo runs within long slow distance efforts. Some athletes choose to run marathons or half marathons in the spring and incorporate winter training into meeting those goals.

Incorporate weights, up to 3 times a week, into your schedule to take a break from swimming, biking and, running. In Colorado, we like to have fun in the snow. Snowshoe races and skate skiing have been big hits to break up the monotony of the same old schedule. Have fun with it. Try something new!
